Shopfront repairs
Repairs to aluminium and glass shopfronts: doors that have dropped or drag on the floor, worn door closers, broken locks, leaking frames and damaged panels. We cover shops and businesses within 100 road miles of Birmingham. We usually price a repair after we have seen the fault, and you get the price in writing before any work.
Do you need council permission?
- Usually nothing from the councilUsually not — check
A repair that keeps the same look usually needs no planning permission.
- Listed building consentSometimes
Some repairs to a listed building still need consent, for example replacing old glass or old woodwork.
This is our general guide. Your council makes the final decision.

Is it worth repairing an old shopfront instead of replacing it?
Often, yes, and the council may prefer it. Some councils will not let you remove an old shopfront in a conservation area unless you show it cannot be repaired. If the front is solid but a door closer has failed or a door has dropped, that is a repair, not a new front.
What usually goes wrong with an aluminium shop door?
The closer in the floor or above the door wears out, so the door slams or will not shut. The top hinge point works loose, so the door drops and drags. The lock goes out of line. Or the rubber seals wear out, and the frame starts to whistle and leak. Most of these are fixed in one visit once we know which part is needed.
